We’re usually taught that good listening means paying close attention to the words. And of course the words matter. But in many important conversations, especially with family members and close friends, the words are only the surface layer.

Underneath them is often something else.

Disappointment.

Fear.

Embarrassment.

Loneliness.

Frustration.

A desire to matter.

A need to feel included.

A wish to be respected.

If you respond only to the sentence, you may completely miss the message.

Suppose a family member says:

“Nobody ever tells me anything around here.”

The literal response might be:

“That’s not true. I told you about the appointment last week, and Susan told you about the dinner on Tuesday.”

Factually, you may be correct.

Relationally, you may have answered the wrong question.

The person may not actually be asking for an audit of how many times information was shared. Identify the strongest likely underlying feeling or relational concern, such as hurt, exclusion, disappointment, fear, loneliness, frustration, lack of respect, or a desire to matter, and explain what details support that interpretation.
